【How To Make My Birds Get Closer To Me? 】

Some bird owners would ask me, why do the birds let me touch and let me get close to them? How are the birds trained? How do you know if a bird likes you? In fact, the pet bird is a unique pet with intelligence and emotion. In this post, I will share how to judge whether your bird likes you, and share some of my personal methods to make your bird closer to you.

There are several signs that indicate a bird likes you:

  1. Willingness to approach you: Birds will fly to you or hop onto your shoulder/hand, indicating that they are willing to be with you and feel safe and comfortable around you.
  2. Willingness to interact with you: Birds may engage in activities like singing, dancing, or playing with toys when you are around. They might also mimic your speech, showing interest in your voice.
  3. Seeking your attention: Birds may actively seek your attention by calling you, pecking you, or touching you.
  4. Allowing your touch: If a bird allows you to pet, hold, or play with it, it indicates that it feels close to you and trusts you.
  5. Displaying excitement and happiness: If a bird becomes excited and happy upon seeing you, such as by spreading its wings, dancing, or chirping joyfully, it could be expressing its love for you.

However, each pet bird has a unique personality and preferences. Some birds may have more introverted personalities and may not exhibit all of the above behaviors. Therefore, it’s important to consider the specific circumstances of your own bird when making judgments.

Here are some ways to make your bird get closer to you:

  1. Gradual approach: If you want your bird to get closer to you, gradually decrease the distance between you and the bird. For example, you can start by observing them from a distance and then slowly move closer until you can interact with them. Birds need time to familiarize themselves with you and build trust, so take it slow.
  2. Feeding them: When you provide food for your bird, they will start to see you as a friend and realize that you mean no harm and no dangerous. Try hand-feeding them their favorite treats, such as seeds or fruits. Over time, the bird will be willing to get closer to you.
  3. Interacting with them: Interacting with your bird is an important way to build a relationship. Engage with your bird daily through activities like singing, talking, or playing with toys. Consistency is key—repeat the same interactions every day to help your bird become familiar with your habits.
  4. Time and patience: Building a relationship takes a lot of time and patience. When a bird feels safe and relaxed, it will be more willing to engage with you.
  5. Provide a comfortable environment: Birds need a safe and comfortable living environment. Provide them with a clean, secure, warm, and spacious cage or room. Remember to clean their living cages/places and food/water bowls daily. 【15 Tips : What Should Pet Bird Owner Do for Pet Bird Every Day?】
  6. Sit quietly next to your bird: By quietly sitting next to your bird, they will gradually get used to your presence and may start to approach you.
  7. Give them personal space: Birds also need their own “personal space.” If you constantly invade their space, they may feel threatened and resist getting close to you.

Establishing a relationship with your bird requires a lot of patience and time, especially considering the bird’s individual personality. Bird owners need to engage in daily interactions with their birds, and over time, they will notice improvements in their relationship.

Many bird owners are afraid of being bitten by their birds. However, birds typically bite as a self-defense response when they are in a bad mood or feeling scared. If you are genuinely afraid of being bitten by a bird, you may need to reconsider whether you should own a bird. 【WHY DOES YOUR BIRD BITE YOUR FINGERS? (VIDEO)】
